Children in Ahanta West

Breaking the Cycle of Poverty

Children who face poverty and social pressures would otherwise be unlikely to complete their schooling. Drawn from families who often live on less than $1.25 per day, the pupils of Captain Schools are shining examples of what students can achieve when they are given the opportunity to receive a quality education.

Initiated after two years of in-depth research in Ahanta West, Captain Schools was created to address devastating social challenges — teenage pregnancy, school dropouts, and the generational cycle of poverty that traps communities.

Education for Responsible Global Citizens

Education equips learners with the skills and values needed to be responsible global citizens, such as respect for human rights, gender equality, and environmental sustainability.

Investing in and strengthening a country's education sector is key to the development of any country and its people. Without investment in quality education, progress on all other developmental indicators will stagnate.

"Education is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty. We must ensure that all children irrespective of where they live get a quality education, prioritizing the most vulnerable."

Sustainable Development Goal 4

The Captain Schools asserts to the SDGs — especially Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

4.1
Primary & Secondary Education

To ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes.

4.2
Early Childhood Development

To ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education.

Value-Added Innovation

Captain Schools adopts value-added innovation and the next-practice approach in all things. With generous and ongoing support from individuals and institutions around the world, we have built an exceptional institution and a centre of excellence in education.

Every single one of our students was chosen because they combined academic promise with a desperately poor background and a great attitude to work and life.

Our free tuition approach has contributed tremendously to poverty alleviation and wealth creation both directly and indirectly. To improve on the nutritional needs of the children, Captain Schools provides an on-site canteen that serves two nutritious hot meals daily — breakfast and lunch — at a subsidized rate.

"It's our vision to provide the students with scholarship, school uniforms, books and accessories necessary to grant them that peace of mind to study and grow fruitfully to become change makers in our society."

Everything we do is for the children, and to produce successful academic and welfare outcomes. Each child we invite into the school represents another family who has the opportunity to escape the cycle of poverty.
